Owen Goin’ Nowhere

March 31, 2009 by

Michael Owen is now just 8/11 with Paddy Power to fail to play for England in South Africa after Fabio Capello all but wrote off the Newcastle striker’s international chances.

Failure to be called up for Wednesday’s game against Ukraine has moved Owen’s odds to not make South Africa next summer to odds-on for the first time whilst the 40 goal England striker is now out to 4/1 to ever break Bobby Charlton’s 49 goal England record.

With his contract up in the summer Owen might believe a change of club will boost his chances. Paddy Power are betting on where out of contract Owen will start next season with current club Newcastle the 6/5 favourites. Free-spending Manchester City are the first of the clubs in the running at 4/1 should he move elsewhere with a trip to LA Galaxy out at 33/1.

Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “The England door may not be completely shut if Owen can put a run of games together but with Darren Bent’s call up effectively demoting Owen to England’s eighth choice striker it doesn’t look good.”

World Cup Qualifying

Meanwhile England are now 1/6 to top their World Cup Qualifying group ahead of their Wednesday game against Ukraine and 1/10 to qualify for South Africa next summer. Northern Ireland may be a distant 12/1 to top Group Three but the current leaders are 6/1 to eventually qualify for next summer’s tournament.

Ireland are 15/8 to make it to South Africa with Scotland at 10/3.

8/11 No

4/1 Michael Owen to break Bobby Charlton’s England goals record

Many a world statesmen, literary giant and Hollywood legend has performed the ritual and now TV’s favourite yellow bellied character Homer Simpson is set to kiss the infamous Blarney Stone, when The Simpson’s visit Ireland this St.Patricks Day.

St Patrick’s Day this year will be celebrated with a special “Oirish” episode of The Simpsons which will be screened in Ireland ahead of its transmission in the US for the first time in the 20-year history of the show.
Ireland’s patron saint of bookies, Paddy Power, has wasted no time coming out with some animated bets on the one-off episode and are betting 6/4 that Homer leans back to kiss the gift of gab wall. However the cheeky bookie isn’t ruling anything out with the clumsy character and are also offering odds on him holding baby Maggie out to kiss the wall at 6/1. February 24, 2009 by

Bookmaker PaddyPower are lending their support to a serial tweet called Paul Smith who, on the 1st March, will attempt to travel as far around the world as possible in 30 days, relying only on the goodwill of people using Twitter, the latest online social networking site phenomenon which is growing like wildfire!

Paul will be attempting to “twitchhike” from his home in Newcastle upon Tyne to as far as New Zealand in the space of 30 days all in the name of charity:water – a non profit organisation that brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

To support Paul’s cause for charity and get people ‘Twittering’ behind him in support, bookies Paddy Power are betting on just how far he’ll get on his quest to the other side of the world!
At the moment the odds aren’t too favourable with Paddy Power offering 7/4 that Paul struggles to make it out of the UK, but the bookie is hopeful that he’ll get much further and is quoting 7/2 odds that Paul will have tweet success and reach Campbell Island in New Zealand within the 30 days.

Paddy Power are also promising the twitchhiker £1000 towards his charity if he makes it all the way in the allocated time.

Paddy Power said: “Twitter is becoming increasingly popular and his catching up fast with Facebook and Bebo as the place to be seen online. Even I’m on Twitter! I’d offer Paul a bed at my house only I’m pretty sure a stop at Ireland would be a bit of a detour to New Zealand!”

With Irish personalities Kenny Egan, Samantha Mumba and Eoghan Quigg all boasting Twitter accounts, Paddy Power are betting on which Irish celebrity will publicly endorse Twitter next. Hollywood hell raiser Colin Farrell is the 6/1 favourite followed by former RTE presenter Brian Ormond at 8/1. Even former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is being tipped at 18/1 to open a Twitter account!
