Betfair Stat Attack – May

Welcome to Stat Attack with our friends over at BETFAIR

Here we give a round up of the pick of the prices traded on the exchange during the past month’s action.

Certainly makes for some interesting reading…….

22nd May

Blackpool are the 20th and final side to have booked their place in the 2010/11 edition of the Premier League after beating Cardiff City in the Championship play-off final by a 3-2 scoreline this afternoon. The Tangerines were amongst the favourites to be relegated to League One at the start of the campaign which explains why they were as big as [60.0] on Betfair to get promoted. But Ian Holloway’s side are nothing if not resilient and increasingly dangerous when the chips are down and this afternoon’s match was no exception, winning in 90 minutes after twice going a goal down.

Former Newcastle man Michael Chopra opened the scoring for Cardiff, Blackpool skipper Charlie Adam hit back and then the highly-rated Joe Ledley scored Cardiff’s second, leaving Blackpool with a mountain to climb. Uphill task it may have been but goals from Gary Taylor-Fletcher and journeyman striker Brett Ormerod put Blackpool up just before the break. That was obviously good news for their fans who had made the long trip down to Wembley but it was even better news for a handful of punters on Betfair. Those who had backed Ian Holloway’s troops to be up at the break secured in-running odds of 75.0 and those who had backed the “any unquoted” runner on the half-time score market (either side to score three goals in the first-half) got 48.0.

The second-half promised more of the same early on but Blackpool were understandably more concerned with winning promotion than entertaining the fans at Wembley or the viewers back home in a match that was believed to be worth £90 million to the victor. Conditions were hot and stifling, the pitch was heavy and slow and with Cardiff running out of steam and Blackpool protecting what they had, that’s how the match stayed. Blackpool were backed at 9.0 to win the match when 2-1 down and at 55.0 to win by a 3-2 scoreline.

There will no doubt be plenty of celebrating tonight and for a couple of weeks beyond that but very soon Ian Holloway will have to start thinking about what he needs to do to prepare his side for the dizzy heights of the Premier League. The ink may not yet have dried on the newspapers reporting on his team’s historic victory but already bookies are writing off his teams’ chances of avoiding the drop next season, with Blackpool chalked up as the 1.4 favourites to go straight back down.

22nd May

Inter have won the Champions League in thoroughly convincing fashion after being matched at a high of 50.0 on Betfair during the group stages. At that stage they looked like they were crashing out before they’d even got going but no Jose Mourinho team is beaten until the final whistle is blown and so it proved with his side knocking out the likes of Barcelona and Chelsea along the way en route to completing an unprecedented treble in Italian football.

Diego Milito was matched at odds of [7.0] to open the scoring and Inter never looked back after that, with the Argentine adding a second midway through the second-half. The Italians were matched at a high of [2.88] to win in 90 minutes and at [16.0] to win by a 2-0 scoreline.

No betting is currently available on Betfair on Jose Mourinho walking out on this very pitch every other week next season but wherever his future lies, it’s been another Special evening tonight.

16th May

England were backed at a high of 15 in Betfair’s Twenty20 World Cup tournament winner market. Beaten finalists Australia were backed at a low of 1.54 to lift the trophy.

In-running punters got a high price of 2.8 about an England victory following a slow start to their chase of Australia’s total.

15th May

Chelsea v Portsmouth (1-0)

Chelsea backed at 15.5 for a Premier League and FA Cup double
Chelsea backed at 5.9 to win the Cup in the outright market and a high of 1.39 to win in 90 minutes
Under 1.5 goals backed at 7
Chelsea backed at 1.13 to score two goals or more
Drogba to score first in a 1-0 win was backed at 40

12th May

24 years later Diego broke English hearts once again as Atletico Madrid beat Fulham after extra-time to win the inaugural edition of the Europa League. Diego Forlan scored half-way through the first half after being matched at odds of 6.4 to open the scoring and his team traded at just 1.31 to win in 90 minutes but the Cottagers hit back through Simon Davies just before the break. Despite there being a few chances in the second-half, that’s how it stayed with those who backed the draw in-running at 5.7 and the 1-1 scoreline at 9.2 pretty satisfied with the absence of any further goals.

Tiredness and weariness set in during extra-time and for much of the 30 minutes it looked like penalties would be needed to find a winner but up popped Uruguay star Diego Forlan again in the dying seconds to net the winner. Atletico were matched at 8.0 in-running in the extra-time match odds market and at odds of 14.5 to win after extra-time before kick-off in the “method of victory” market.

Fulham fans can be proud of their achievements during what was an extremely long and emotional campaign in this competition but Atletico, who always looked like they had an extra gear in them if necessary, were probably deserved winners in the end. The Spanish side were matched at a high of 80 to win the competition.

Betfair Stat Attack – April

Welcome to Stat Attack with our friends over at BETFAIR

Here we give a round up of the pick of the prices traded on the exchange during the past month’s action.

Certainly makes for some interesting reading…….

29th April

There will be no dream all-English Europa League final after Atletico Madrid, matched at 7.6 on Betfair to qualify against Liverpool, secured a priceless goal in extra-time to book a date with Fulham in Hamburg. The home side were backed at a high of 1.87 to win the match in 90 minutes and at 8.4 to win 1-0, the only result that would take them to into extra-time.

And it all looked rosy in the Liverpool garden after Yossi Benayoun scored in the first half of extra-time, at which point they traded at a low of 1.5 to actually win the Europa league. But up popped Diego Forlan, famous for scoring a brace against Liverpool in a 2-0 win for Man Utd a few years back, breaking hearts in the Kop End and ensuring Rafael Benitez will finish what is likely to be his last season at the club, trophyless. Atletico Madrid have been backed as high as 80.0 to win this competition but are now just 1.66 with Betfair punters installing them as favourites over Fulham.

Roy Hodgson’s side did it the hard way themselves, going a goal down before coming back to beat Hamburg, the very side whose stadium will be hosting the final. The Cottagers were matched at a high of 20.0 to win the match and at 24.0 to win it 2-1. They also drifted to odds of 17.5 to qualify before goals from Simon Davies and Zolten Gera sent them through. Fulham famously started this campaign long before the Premier League season got underway , needing to go through the qualifying rounds and it was at this stage that they were matched at the huge price of 560. Hardly surprising given they had to follow qualifying with a group stage and then face four more knock-out stages before they even reached a potential final.

But tonight Roy Hodgson and his troops will feel this mammoth campaign was all worth it and despite going into the final as the underdogs, many out there will feel they can upset the books once again.

28th April

Barcelona v Inter Milan (1-0; 2-3 on aggregate)

Former 1.5 Champions League favourites Barcelona out of competition
Inter Milan have traded at a high of 50 to lift the trophy; now new favourites at 1.62
Barca were backed at a low of 1.16 on Betfair to qualify from the semi after taking the lead in the first leg; Inter traded at a high of 7.4 in the same market
Barcelona matched at 3.2 to win the game after scoring in the 84th minute
Over 1.5 goals backed at 1.19

25th April

Chelsea beat Stoke City 7-0 this afternoon which sent a chilling message to their title arrivals Manchester United, and did wonders to their goal difference in the process. The Blues only ever touched 1.25 on the match odds market after taking an early lead courtesy of Salomon Kalou, who went on to score a hat-trick. The 7-0 scoreline was backed in-running at odds of 100. The three points, the superb goal difference and the level of the performance has seen Chelsea shorten to 1.64 for the Premier League title with Manchester United now 2.54.

Over at Turf Moor, Liverpool’s 4-0 thumping of Burnley just confirmed what has seemed like an inevitability for the past few months: Burnley are now officially relegated. Rafa Benitez’s side were matched at a high of 2.0 and just about kept them in contention for a top four finish, albeit an unlikely chance. They now trade at 16.5, having been backed at odds of just 1.14 when it looked like Champions League football in 2010/11 was no more than a formality.

One of the sides deemed to have a better chance of playing in Europe’s premier club competition next year is Aston Villa, who made the most of a controversial penalty at home to rivals Birmingham to grab all three points. James Milner was backed at odds of 9.8 to open the scoring, Villa touched 3.95 and the 1-0 scoreline at 8.4. Villa are trading at 10.0 for a top four finish but Tottenham at 1.99 and Man City at 2.64 are still the teams to beat.

21st April

Bayern Munich moved a step closer to a first Champions League final in ten years after being matched at 3.5 on Betfair to beat Lyon tonight in a match that had a bit of everything. The brilliant yet temperamental Franck Ribery was sent off just before half-time for Bayern which put them under the cosh but a second red of the match, this time for Jeremy Toulalan of Bordeaux in the 54th minute, levelled matters and the home side took advantage.

The source of the goal was a familiar one, Arjen Robben scoring again after having already scored the decisive goals that saw Bayern knock out Fiorentina and Manchester United in the previous rounds. He was matched at 10.0 to open the scoring. Even the goal had some element of controversy though with replays showing it may have flicked the head of team-mate Toni Muller on its way in after the Dutchman unleashed a shot from just outside the box.

The result was good news for those who backed the 1-0 scoreline at 8.4 and those who showed faith in Bayern’s back five by siding with a home clean sheet at 2.58. Louis Van Gaal’s team go into the second leg as the 1.36 favourites to progress but despite being in that position are still only the third favourites at 3.7 to win the competition. The Betfair market thinks the winner of the other semi-final will go on and win the competition with Inter 2.7 and Barcelona 3.35.

20th April

Inter Milan v Barcelona (3-1)

• Inter backed at 11 to win after conceding first (Barca matched at 1.45)
• Over 3.5 goals backed at 7.6
• Final score of 3-1 backed at 75
• Inter 1.75 to qualify for final, Barca 2.3
• Inter and Barca share Champions League favouritism at 2.92

17th April

Manchester United may still be as long as 4.5 to win the Premier League but they’ve got Paul Scholes to thank for still being in contention at all, after being matched at odds of 42.0 in-running on Betfair to beat rivals Manchester City. The veteran midfielder was backed at huge odds of 27.0 to open the scoring and those who had shown faith in the former England man had to wait until second-half injury-time before knowing they had a winning bet. The stalemate had been backed as low as 1.05 before Scholes’ winner. Chelsea are still heavily fancied to win the title at 1.3, having traded at a low of 1.13 when it seemed like United would get only a draw from today’s match.

That may have been the biggest story as far as far as the title goes but Bolton were responsible for the greatest comeback of the day. Backed at a high of 120 whilst trailing at that fortress that is the Britannia Stadium, a late double from Matt Taylor turned the match on its head and handed Bolton three more points.

Having twice taken and lost a lead at Ewood Park, Everton fans would have been very frustrated if they’d left with just a point. They can thank Tim Cahill for ensuring that didn’t happen after the Australian scored a late winner to allow Everton, matched at a high of 9.4 to win the match. That 2-3 scoreline was backed at 110.

Over at the Stadium Of Light, the Black Cats were in control for most of the match as they took a 2-0 lead before a late Burnley goal gave them some nervy last few minutes. The home win never went above the 1.78 mark and the defeat means Burnley are that much closer to being relegated, now just 1.05 on Betfair.

Hull City are the side most likely to join them (and Portsmouth) in The Championship according to the Betfair market, which makes them a 1.32 chance. Their goalless draw against Birmingham (in which the scoreline was matched at 15.5) may have been a decent result in normal circumstances, but not when you’re when you’re in the position the Tigers are in. West Ham and Wigan, both trading at 6.2, are the sides most likely to go down in their place if Ian Dowie’s side somehow find a way to miraculously avoid the drop for the second season running.

11th April

US Masters

Phil Mickelson was backed at a high of 16.5 on Betfair to win the Masters
Lows: Lee Westwood was backed at 1.98; KJ Choi at 2.82; Tiger Woods at 2.92

Man City v Birmingham (5-1)

• City traded at a high of 1.54 to win the match
• City now 1.39 for a top four finish
• Six goals or more backed at 48

Liverpool v Fulham (0-0)

• Liverpool backed at a low of 1.29 to win; the draw at 6.2
• 0-0 final score backed at 19
• One goal or more backed at 1.05
• Liverpool trade at 20 for a top four finish

Spurs v Portsmouth (0-0; 0-2AET)

• Spurs touched a low of 1.31 to win in 90 minutes; the draw was backed at 6.4
• 0-0 final score backed at 25
• Portsmouth extra-time win backed at 30
• Pompey have been backed at 500 (£10 matched) to win the cup

Blackburn Rovers v Manchester United (0-0)

• United now 7.4 to win the Premier League (Chelsea 1.36, Arsenal 7) and have been backed at 8.2
• Utd backed at 1.49 to win today
• Draw traded at a high of 5.3
• One goal or more backed at 1.05
• Final score of 0-0 backed at 18.5
• Home clean sheet traded at 8.8

Wolves v Stoke (0-0)

• Final score of 0-0 backed at 10
• Wolves 25 to be relegated

10th April

Aston Villa v Chelsea (0-3)

• Chelsea backed at 2.38 to win the game
• Over 2.5 goals backed at 55 in-running before late third goal
• The Blues are now 1.5 to win the Cup before tomorrow’s semi between Spurs (1-3 to win in 90 minutes) and Portsmouth (10)

Hull v Burnley (1-3)

• Burnley backed at 20 after going behind
• Hull at 1.21
• Over 4.5 goals backed at 44
• Burnley 1.15 to go down; Hull 1.41

West Ham v Sunderland (1-0)

• West Ham trade at 5 to be relegated

7th April

There will be no Premier League representatives in the semi-finals of the Champions League after Bayern Munich were matched at odds of 17.5 on Betfair to qualify against Manchester United, which they managed courtesy of a 3-2 defeat this evening, thus going through on the away goals rule.

It all looked like it would be plain sailing for the 2008 champions when they led 3-0 after 40 minutes thanks to a Darren Gibson opener and a Nani brace. At this stage they traded at odds of 1.06 to make the semis but Ivica Olic, who had scored the winner in the first leg, and that man Arjen Robben scored either side of Rafael’s sending-off to get the two goals the German side needed to make it to the next round. The final scoreline was matched at odds of 36.0 and Bayern Munich, matched at a high of 150.0 when they looked like they were heading out of the competition at the group stages now trade at just 6.0 to go all the way.

Things were a little less dramatic over in Bordeaux where the home side beat Lyon 1-0, which proved insufficient to see Laurent Blanc’s side progress. Marouane Chemakh scored just before half-time to give the home team genuine hope of going through and rewarded those who had backed the scoreline at 9.0 and the straightforward win at 3.0 but the second goal never came and Lyon, matched at a high of 2.3 to qualify, will be the ones facing Bayern Munich in the semis. Claude Puel’s team trade as the 8.2 outsiders to win the tournament.

23rd March

Two Ws came head to head tonight as Wolves travelled to West Ham and it is the former who will have a priceless W for win in the form guide after a remarkable 1-3 win that was matched at odds of [120.0] on Betfair.

West Ham were well-fancied to win this match courtesy of solid home form of late and went off at around the [1.7] mark. Wolves were matched as high as [5.9] to take all three points and never looked back after scoring the opener. In fact, West Ham’s only goal of the match was a last-minute consolation effort which brought great disappointment to those who had backed the 0-3 scoreline at the huge price of [210.0] although it did trade as low as [1.1] meaning in-play traders would have had plenty of chances to “green up”.

The win sees Wolves drift to odds of [8.0] for relegation this year, whilst dragging West Ham right back into it. After looking out of the woods a few weeks ago, the Hammers are now the fourth favourites for the drop at [4.4] with only Portsmouth, Hull and Burnley shorter.

18th March

Fulham v Juve 4-1 (5-4 on aggregate)
• Juventus matched at 1.01 to qualify with £51,544 traded after winning the first leg 3-1
• Fulham backed at 75 in the same market but win the second leg 4-1 to reach the quarter-finals
• The Cottagers have been backed at 560 to win the tournament (£4 traded)

17th March

The history books say no-one has successfully defended their Champions League title but on the evidence of tonight’s performance, only the bravest of layers on Betfair are offering odds of 3.0 that Barcelona won’t be doing just that. Pep Guardiola’s side outclassed Stuttgart in all departments during tonight’s second leg and in hindsight the in-running 1.37 about a home win was a case of “buying money” as Barcelona cruised to a 4-0 win.

The Catalans were only ever matched at a high of 1.34 on the “to qualify” market, when they were trailing the German side 1-0 in the first leg, whilst the “any unquoted” runner in the correct score market drifted to 5.4 before Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s last-minute goal.

No Barcelona rout would be complete without a significant contribution from the genial Lionel Messi and this match was no exception. The Argentinean scored the first and third goals of the match and has gone second-favourite to finish as the competition’s top scorer this year at odds of 3.4. Wayne Rooney’s odds are slightly bigger at 3.6 whilst Cristiano Ronaldo, who won’t be adding to his goal tally this year after Real were knocked out of the competition, is still the favourite at 2.26.

Over in Bordeaux, the French champions also booked their place in the quarter-finals but it was from straightforward. They did take the lead but Olympiacos hit back to level the score at 1-1 and at that stage another goal by the Greeks would have knocked Laurent Blanc’s side out. But it wasn’t to be and a late strike from long-term Arsenal target Marouane Chamakh ensured Bordeaux (matched at a high of 5.6) won the match in the end by 2-1. Bordeaux now trade at odds of 25.0 to win the Champions League, after being backed at odds of 390 earlier on in the competition.

16th March

Another big European night ended in familiar disappointment for Chelsea fans after Inter Milan were matched at odds of 22.0 on Betfair to beat Carlo Ancelotti’s side 1-0 and progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. After last year’s controversial exit to Barcelona in the semi-finals and their penalty shoot-out defeat in the final the year before, Chelsea look destined to not winning Europe’s blue-riband competition.

Curiously, for a third time running Chelsea’s failure will coincide with a suspension for Didier Drogba. He was sent off in the final two years ago, was suspended after his post-match antics in the defeat to Barcelona last year and was dismissed once more tonight, this time for an off-the-ball stamp on Inter midfielder Thiago Motta. A sending off in the match was matched at odds of 4.9

Chelsea went into this match as 1.62 favourites to win in 90 minutes whilst the draw traded at odds of 1.77 before Samuel Eto’s 78th minute winner; the Cameroon star was matched as high as 14.0 to open the scoring with Inter backed at 7.2 just before his goal.

Chelsea’s shock exit has predictably shaken up the winner market on Betfair. Chelsea were strongly fancied to go far this year and traded at just 4.5 to win the competition for the first time in their history. Inter Milan on the other hand, who were backed as high as 50.0 to lift the trophy whilst struggling to get out of the group stages are now the third-favourites at 5.7 with only Barcelona (3.4) and Man Utd (4.8) shorter.

Surprising as Chelsea’s exit was, a far bigger upset was taking place in Sevilla. Having secured a 1-1 away draw at CSKA Moscow, it looked a pretty straightforward task for the La Liga side but a 2-1 win for the Russian outfit saw them progress. The away win was matched at 8.2 with the correct 1-2 scoreline backed at 38. The Russians were also matched at a high of 5.8 to qualify. Betfair traders who backed them as high as 1000.0 to win this competition will have plenty of chances to secure a profit with their price now at the 40.0 mark and that may prove to be the best option. Only Olympiacos (260) and Stuttgart (150) who have huge tasks head of them in their second legs tomorrow night are bigger prices to go on and win the competition, which suggests the Betfair market thinks this as far as they’re going this year.

14th March

It was as business as usual for Manchester United at Old Trafford with a regulation 3-0 win that put them top of the table. There were few surprises on the score-sheet either with that man Wayne Rooney adding two more goals to his tally before Dimitar Berbatov added a late third. United drifted to 1.42 on Betfair when going into the break level at half-time and the flurry of second-half goals caught some of the correct score layers off-guard with backers of the final scoreline securing odds as high as 70.0. The United clean sheet was matched at a high of 1.88. The defending champions are now the favourites for the Premier League at 2.6 with Chelsea 2.72 and Arsenal 4.1

Fulham’s Thursday night Europa League opponents Juventus were on the wrong side of one of the greatest comebacks Betfair’s football markets have ever seen. At 3-0 up at home to the modest Siena, Juventus were matched at Betfair’s minimum price of 1.01 with the draw backed at odds of 160 before three goals from the visitors left Juve fans, and indeed their backers, totally stunned. 3-3 draws are few and far between but this weekend Juve’s wasn’t the only one in Serie A. Over in Livorno, Roma’s visit ended with the same scoreline, which was matched at odds of 220.

There may have just been just the two goals in it, but Manchester City’s visit to Sunderland provided an equally thrilling match as Adam Johnson’s last-gasp equaliser for Roberto Mancini’s side secured a share of the spoils. Sunderland scored early on and spent most of the match trying to protect their lead. They looked like they might do just that and traded as low as 1.13 before Johnson’s curled effort from the edge of the box secured the draw backers (at odds as high as 9.0) a big payday.

13th March

Bolton took a huge step towards avoiding the drop by thrashing Liverpool’s recent conquerors Wigan this afternoon. The Trotters were matched at 2.28 to take all three points and at 3.85 to be leading at half-time and winning at full-time. At odds of 15 to go down now, Betfairians expect Owen Coyle’s side to still be playing in the Premier League next season.

Over at Stamford Bridge it wasn’t all plain sailing for Chelsea but they got there in the end. Having conceded an equaliser when Scott Parker scored from long range effort just before half-time Carlo Ancelotti’s men were under some pressure and drifted to odds of 1.55 to win the match. But two second-half goals from Didier Drogba and one from Florent Malouda were enough to allow Chelsea to go favourites for the Premier League once again at 2.48, with Man Utd yet to play Fulham this weekend.

Spurs may be well out of the title race but their 3-1 win over Blackburn has allowed them to remain in real contention for a Top Four finish. At 3.6 they’re the same price as Liverpool but behind Man City who are the 2.5 favourites to clinch the last remaining Champions League spot with Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal virtual shoo-ins. The 3-1 scoreline against Blackburn was matched at 42.0.

Wolves came out on top in the six-pointer of a match over at Turf Moor, which has seen them eased out to 2.9 for the drop. The defeat means Burnley are now just 1.28 for the drop themselves, a far cry from the dizzy heights they reached at the start of the season when they were beating the likes of Man Utd and Everton, during which they were matched as big as 3.95 to go down. The Wolves win was matched at a high of 3.8

The comeback kings of the day were Birmingham City who came back from 2-0 down at home to Everton to salvage a draw. The Toffees traded at just 1.09 to take all three points with the draw matched at 14.0 before Birmingham found their feet and scored twice to take a share of the spoils.

9th March

Arsenal sent a chilling message to the remaining Champions League contenders that they mean business after dumping FC Porto out of the competition by winning the second leg 5-0. A hat-trick from Nicklas Bendtner did most of the damage in a game where they were matched at a high of 1.7 on Betfair to win. The Gunners had been matched at a high of 2.2 to qualify when trailing Porto 1-0 in the first leg.

It was a good night for those who had predicted plenty of goals with odds of 10 being matched on both the “any unquoted” scorelines and on five or more goals being scored in the match. Although they are already in the quarter-finals, Arsenal are still the biggest priced of the three English teams to win the Champions League at odds of 10. Despite still having tricky second legs against AC Milan and Inter Milan to negotiate, Manchester United and Chelsea are both trading at 7.0.

If it was goals you wanted, another five were scored in Florence this evening as Fiorentina beat Bayern Munich 3-2, yet still went out on the away goals rule. The Italians were matched at 3.5 to win the match and that was ultimately a winning bet, as was the 3.7 Bayern were matched at to qualify. The big winning punters were those who predicted the 3-2 scoreline though, that was matched at the most attractive odds of 95. Having been matched at a high of 150 to win this competition whilst seriously struggling in the group stages, Louis Van Gaal’s team are now chalked up at 14.5 on Betfair to go all the way.

21st February

Manchester City and Liverpool played out a cagey, goalless draw at Eastlands this afternoon which means no ground was made by either side in the battle for fourth place. Liverpool are now slightly shorter than City at 3.05 to finish in the top four with Mancini’s boys at 3.25. The 0-0 score was correctly predicted at 11.5 on Betfair.

Aston Villa picked up another three points that kept alive their own hopes of still finishing the season in fourth place after being matched at odds of 2.76 on Betfair to beat Burnley. Villa drifted to this price in-running after Steven Fletcher’s early strike for the visitors but their comeback was nothing short of remarkable, scoring five before Burnley hit back with a consolation goal at the death. All of which was good news for those who had backed seven goals or more at the massive price of 60. Villa are now trading at odds of 4.0 for a Champions League spot whilst the defeat means Burnley are just 1.77 for the drop with only Portsmouth at 1.1 shorter.

Earlier in the day another relegation-threatened side also came back from their travels empty-handed when Bolton succumbed to Blackburn. The home team drifted to odds of 2.56 but won pretty comprehensively in the end with the 3-0 scoreline backed at 34.

Neither Birmingham nor Fulham are in any danger of the drop but the former will be kicking themselves after letting a 1-0 lead slip against another Europa League-place rival. A super strike from Damien Duff put Fulham back in the game before an injury-time winner from Bobby Zamora from a free-kick settled matters. As the free-kick was being taken the draw was being backed at 1.2 while Roy Hodgson’s team were matched by some ambitious, and ultimately shrewd backers at odds of 11.5 when the Cottagers were a goal down.

20th February

Everton staged a remarkable comeback against Manchester United this lunchtime which saw the final 3-1 scoreline matched at 140 on Betfair. When most teams go one down against the Premier League champions they normally take nothing from the match but this side of David Moyes’ is more spirited than most and those who backed Everton in the match odds as high as 22.0 will be grateful. United were backed at a low of 1.28 after Dimitar Berbatov, matched at 9.6 on the first goalscorer market, had put Sir Alex Ferguson’s troops ahead.

United are now 3.8 for the Premier League after Chelsea took advantage of their slip-up by going to Molineaux and taking all three points. Carlo Ancelotti’s men made a slow start to the match and could even have gone behind, drifting from starting odds of 1.3 to 1.64 before a Didier Drogba double settled matters. Those two goals have seen his odds to finish the season as the league’s top goalscorer slashed to 2.22 incidentally after 1.8 favourite Wayne Rooney drew a blank.

Over at the Emirates, Arsenal secured a win but it was far from straightforward. Many would have predicted a comfortable win but it needed an injury-time penalty by Cesc Fabregas for Gunners fans to be able to feel the win was in the bag after Niklas Bendtner’s early strike. At 8.6 Arsenal aren’t completely out of the title race but will be relying on plenty of slip-ups from Chelsea and Manchester United.

At Upton Park West Ham secured a healthy 3-0 win over Hull City after being matched at a high of 1.96, with the scoreline matched at 21. West Ham’s relegation fears were eased with these priceless three points as they now trade at 8 but the result predictably had the adverse effect on their opponents. Hull trade as the 1.94 favourites for the drop with only Portsmouth (1.14) and Burnley 91.82) shorter.

16th February

Manchester United took a huge step towards qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Champions League tonight as they beat AC Milan at the San Siro after being matched at odds of 9.0 on Betfair. The inimitable Ronaldinho was backed at 11.5 to open the scoring but that’s as good as it got for the home side with a fortuitous goal from Paul Scholes and a brace from Wayne Rooney turning the tie on its head. Milan were matched at a low of 1.44 when they were in the lead.

Many predicted a cautious affair before kick-off with goals at a premium but some Betfair punters disagreed and put their money where their mouth was, with five goals or more backed at odds of 20.0 and the 2-3 scoreline matched at 65. United are now 1.11 to qualify for the quarters, having briefly touched 2.0 when going behind earlier tonight.

Wayne Rooney’s two goals have seen his odds of finishing as the tournament’s top scorer chopped to 9.0 after being matched as high as 75.0 whilst United’s price to win this year’s Champions League has also unsurprisingly shortened to 6.8, making them joint-third favourites alongside Real Madrid, and behind just Barcelona and Chelsea.

The reason Real are on the drift is as a direct result of their 1-0 defeat at the hands of Lyon in tonight’s other tie. Matched at a low of 2.0, they couldn’t find that priceless away goal. Lyon were matched at a high of 4.9 to win the match but the Betfair market thinks the one goal lead won’t be enough to see them through. From a high of 5.5 to qualify, Lyon are now chalked up at 2.58 with Real fancied to turn the tie around in the second leg, which is why they’re the favourites at odds of 1.62.

6/7th February

Bolton v Fulham
Wanderers matched at 2.18 to beat Fulham
One goal or more traded at 1.09

Burnley v West Ham
Burnley backed at 3 to win first game under Brian Laws
Burnley now even money chances to be relegated with 18th placed West Ham 4.6 in the same market

Hull v Manchester City
Hull backed at 6.2 to take all three points
Two-one final score 24
City now 3 to finish in top four having traded at 1.6

Manchester United v Portsmouth
Five-nil final score backed at 20
Over 5.5 goals backed at 1.5
United now 2.4 to win the league ahead of Sunday’s clash between Chelsea and Arsenal
Portsmouth 1.2 to go down

Stoke v Blackburn
Stoke backed at 2.46 to win

Sunderland v Wigan
Wigan backed at a low of 1.59 to win
Draw traded at a high of 5.3

Birmingham v Wolves (2-1)
Brum backed at in-running high of 32 after scoring twice in the last ten minutes to overhaul Wolves
Wolves touched a low of 1.3 to win
Wolves 1.9 to be relegated
