Just How Good Are Tom Segal And Pricewise Extra?

Anyone picking up today’s copy of the Racing Post wont failed to have noticed the big splash made on their front page after Tom Segal bagged a couple of winners yesterday for their Pricewise column.

Tom highlighted both Marcret and Absinthe who won at 13/2 and 10/3 SP, whilst he also picked out Jack Dexter for their subscription based Pricewise Extra service at 9/2 SP. (As a side-note, it’s worth noting that the 11/2 claimed by the RP on Absinthe would have likely been reduced by non-runners and Rule 4 deductions)

Naturally Tom should be pleased with himself for doing so well yesterday, but the bigger question is…just how well do his results stack up over time?

Well I want to tackle that today as since October 2009 we have been tracking every single one of the tips supplied by the Racing Post’s Pricewise Extra service in order to report back to our members.

The Pricewise Extra service allows access to the paid for tips service from the Racing Post that costs followers between £1.90 a day and £4.50 per week if paying annually to follow. Posted up at midday, it features tips from the likes of Tom Segal, Andrew Barr and others such as Eddie Fremantle & Paul Kealy on a daily basis.

Tom Segal Previously Bang Out Of Form

What the Racing Post fail to tell you is just how poor Tom’s tips through the Pricewise Extra service have been for a long time, prior to the winner yesterday.

Taking his figures at advised odds (more about how tricky these are to obtain shortly) since the start of 2011, our records show his stats as follows:

129 bets, 131 pts staked
loss to advised odds of -51 pts and a Return on Investment of -38.93%

This also includes a recent run of 33 bets which failed to yield one first placed finish, with just a placed each way effort at 12/1 stopping the losing rot.

Prior to 2011 though, Tom was red-hot with a profit of 132.2 pts from 175 bets and a 75.11% ROI.

Indeed if combining his record both pre and post 2011, our record shows that he comes out with a 26.45% Return on Investment from 303 bets so overall he is profitable. You just need to be very patient if following him in…and that’s before we discuss how tough it is to get the odds he puts forward.

Bookmakers Slashing Pricewise Extra Tips

Something else Tom Segal and his Pricewise Extra compatriots are noted for is how quick the bookmakers slash the advised odds on the tips they put up.

In our Secret Betting Club review of the service we tackled this head on, because at times it can be very difficult to get anywhere near the advised prices they put forward and settle bets at.

To take Tom as an example, his record over the 303 bets he has given via Pricewise Extra shows a huge difference between his advised price and the eventual SP.

Advised Profits: +81.2 pts from 307 pts staked
SP Profits: -49.95 pts from 307 pts staked

That’s a massive swing of 131.15 pts, and though we don’t expect many of you will be backing his tips at SP, it’s something you must know about before considering following Tom in.

So although it’s clear Tom has an edge over the bookmakers there is plenty to consider before we all rush to follow him in on his tips today at Chester. You would have needed the patience of a saint if backing the Pricewise Extra tips of late, plus the ability to place his bets at warp speed when they come out to get his advised prices. Something the Racing Post neglect to make mention of in their front page today.

How To Profit From Summer Football

There’s more to Scandinavia than Fjords, Sven and Abba – While the English leagues are winding down, some excellent football is just getting started in Sweden, Finland and Norway.

The summer timetable means that these leagues are generally less affected by bad weather compared to winter leagues. This is possibly one reason why they tend to be higher scoring, a trait which can make matches more predictable with less draws.

The Swedish Allsvenskan league is a great place to hunt for hidden gems due to the league’s volatility. Here, just one team has defended the title in 14 years, creating some juicy prices from the volatility in performance and positions.

In our most recent Secret Betting Club magazine we featured a Summer Football profit guide, prepared by our friends at Football Form Labs.

Form Lab is a football research and analysis tool covering 20 summer leagues, an excellent resource for mining the summer league data. Here are some top tips from our summer football profit guide:

Home bankers in Norway

Norway Analysis:

There is also a fairly strong home team bias with home teams winning half their matches since 2006. Further, top-six teams have won 59% of home games against non-top-six teams since 1998. In keeping with the strong home record, non-top-six teams have a respectable record of winning 40% and losing just 36% of home games against top-six sides since 1998.

The Norwegian league is one of the highest scoring leagues in Europe with 60% of games since 1998 having at least three goals and 38% having +3.5 goals. These figures are slightly lower in recent years, but still high – 57% (over 2.5 goals) and 34% (+3.5 goals) since 2006.

The teams with consistently excellent home records to look for include Tromso, who are miles away from their nearest opposition. Their northerly position helps them get the best of weary travelers.

Since 2007, backing all Tromso in all their home games has made a profit of +13.5 pts from 74 matches (odds equivalent to 1.61).

Other strong home teams include FK Haug who won 9/11 at home last season when you exclude the top-two finishers. Only Rosenborg scored more than them at home last season and you could have made a profit of +9.9 pts from blindly backing them in all their 31 home games since 2010. Stromsgodset have had a very strong home bias over the past couple of years and last term won 11/15 at home – the best record in the league – but just 1/15 on the road! A profit of +21.9 points could have been made from their 73 home games in recent years.

The trend has continued this season, with the three highlighted teams winning 7/8 of the total home games for a combined profit of 4.1 points.

How To Win Betting On Horse Racing – For Dummies!

This week I have a confession to make that when it comes to horse racing – I must admit it, I am far from an expert on the sport of Kings.

It might be a strange thing for the Editor of the Secret Betting Club to share, but there you have it. I know enough to get by at a racecourse, but were I ever needed to discuss at length the chances of X horse or Y trainer, I would soon be stumped!

This lack of knowledge however has not stopped me making a regular income betting on horse racing, because it is my own belief (and personal experience) that as long as you follow the right racing tipsters and experts and know how to place a bet – it can be done. Finding The Right Racing Experts

The tricky part in the above statement though is finding the right tipsters in the first place – who exactly should you listen to when it comes to betting on sports you might know nothing about?

James Ewart is one of Scotland’s youngest and most up and coming trainers and by backing all Ewart’s runners blindly in chase races you can make a handsome profit. In the last three seasons the Borders based trainer has sent out 141 runners in chases returning 27 winners. A strike rate of 19% and profit of £32.61 to a £1 stakes. There should be some mileage in this one for some time yet.

4 runners in total and the big win on Quicoyo would have made a overall £90 profit at £10 level stakes to SP and £123 at Betfair SP (after 5% commission).

Going back for the whole of the 2011/12 chase season, James Ewart has trained 11 chase winners out of 54 with 12 seconds and 10 thirds. At level stakes SP profit that’s +14.64 pts.

The interesting aspect of this strategy is that it only works on his horses in chase races, as in hurdles races he has lost 17.01 pts in the past three seasons.

Again it all boils down to having the right expertise on hand and knowing exactly where the profit is to be made.

The word genius is often banded about and very misused but what the hell, the email I got from Big Mike Marsland was, well, genius.

Update – Big Mike Strikes Again….

Received this in my inbox…….

In Racing today wait until as late as possible here as there are just 8 runners and its a magical frame. I fear brown envelopes. However if 8 go to post then we have a mathematical advantage. Colebrook is 1.45 for the place site via a Bookmaker but you can lay back now to the Betfair place site at 1.19 so a 26 tick profit before the start! Mind you 8 still have to run so be watchful.

Got Colebrook at 5/2 (3.50) each way so 1.50 for the place and laid for 3.6 in the win market and 1.20 in the place market.

All panned out perfectly for just under a 9% ROI as we fully backed / laid before the off this time. As it turned out Colebrook was Unplaced so that was a nice top up for our Betfair account.

Like we say, Genius.

Big Mikes Monday Column

I used to get very excited about a bet which `looks` the part at Ffos Las. 12.45. Here we have – which on the face of it – looks a `Golden Goose`. They come along maybe 2 or 3 times a year. Bookies hate them. I can assure you this morning that all Stationers in West Wales will run out of brown envelopes as the layers will be looking to reduce the race to <5 which of course will scupper the trade.

If the unlikely happens and 5 run (!) then the bet works like this…….

Captain Sharpe – Play £100 ew at BOG which is 7/1 with bet365

Concentrate on the Place side.

At SP the 7/1 is equivalent to 2.8 ish The Lay Price on Betfair is 1.3. So via SP / BOG if placed you will pick up £175 for £100 place stake. If you lay £200 back to Betfair it will cost you £60.

So if the horse places you pick up a net £115 and if unplaced you will pick up a net £100 (£200 less £100).

Now on the win side its more difficult. Here you are relying on a subsidy from the place bet and also a bit of in running support from the lemmings.

The first thing to do is assess your profit if the horse wins which will be £700 at BOG. Then pre start you must change your focus into `liability`. Try and lay back as much as you can for a Liability of £400. I think you will get about £60 back via betfair at current prices.

Then you are reliant on the lemmings to retrieve the balance of your £100 as this bet in effect is geared to the place winnings. So I would suggest mines at 6.2, 5.2,4.2 & 3.2 and just in case a big one at 1.7.

It’s a purely mathematical exercise and geared to the place site BUT all this is useless (as I suspect) brown envelopes will show their face before 12.45.

Good luck if popping your toes in the water.

This all panned out to perfection.

In fact Captain Sharpe drifted to 8/1 (9.00) at the off. So we effectively had odds of 3.0 on the place against 1.3 to lay on Betfair. The 1/10 fav Hollow Tree easily won the race (Captain Sharpe came in 2nd) and whilst none of our in-running bets were matched we have laid £45 off pre-race in the win market at 10′s. So our £100 EW returned £300 at the bookie for £100 profit less our £60 place lay at Betfair for £40 profit and we had £45 (£43 after comm) lay winner at Betfair for a £83 overall profit.

Like I say GENIUS!
