Trading Preview
Well who could have predicted that the tiny island nation of Iceland would reach the quarter finals in their first ever major tournament?
Perhaps we shouldn’t have been so shocked at them getting out of their group, after all, they did qualify for France by winning a group containing Holland, Czech Rep and Turkey, unbeaten at home and winning three away including in Amsterdam 1-0. They were solid against Portugal and Hungary, drawing both before beating Austria with a last minute goal to reach the knockout stage. I was not completely surprised with their victory over England as I had predicted England would find it very tough and France will get the same here. They are a decent team who play to their strengths, organised defence and midfield and rely on set-pieces to strike. In Gylfi Sigurdsson they have one of the world’s best free kick takers so France need to take care.
France will be under more pressure than England especially if they don’t get on top early. They haven’t been at their best and Ireland gave them a huge shock in the last round before succumbing with ten men. A lot will depend on the tactics that Deschamps employs. I felt England should have gone wide and down the wings, old fashioned but effective against this type of defence. Iceland will head balls away all day but whipped in crosses behind them will cause problems.
Trading this game will probably depend a lot on what team the French put out. Martial and Coman could be key but will Deschamps risk playing one from the start? Martial would be my choice as he can get behind the Icelanders and his end product is better than any England forward. If they go this way I can see France winning, if they don’t and try and play as England did, they could be in for a long night.
The last competitive meeting was in 1999, so not really relevant and the sides met in a friendly 4 years ago with France winning 3-2. So what will happen? France cannot be backed at 4/9 (1.44) but do we really believe Iceland can do the same again? Keep stakes small especially if France play one of the wingers in fact if Martial starts I wouldn’t go ahead with the Lay personally. I think if he doesn’t, at that price, we can risk a small Lay with a view to trading out if Iceland score or we reach 75 minutes deadlocked. Iceland have scored and conceded in all four games whilst France have scored two in three of the four games played. Trading correct scores might pay dividends and France 2-1 and 3-1 could pay dividends.
